White House Defends Trump's Tariff Policy Amid Growing Scrutiny

Washington: The White House issued a press statement asserting President Donald Trump’s unwavering commitment to his mission of "making America wealthy again." The statement, titled "Why President Trump's Tariffs Are Necessary," argues that decades of flawed trade policies have undermined the United States, and efforts are already underway to revive American industry.

Since President Trump assumed office in January, numerous countries and major corporations have either committed to or are considering investments in the U.S. Among the cited examples is American tech giant Apple, which announced in February a $500 billion investment for training programs and equipment manufacturing in the U.S.

Meanwhile, six senior Democratic lawmakers have written to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), calling for an investigation into potential violations of federal securities laws by President Trump. The letter, signed by former presidential candidate and current Senator Elizabeth Warren, urges the SEC to determine whether recent market fluctuations following tariff announcements benefited the Trump administration or its associates.

The Democrats criticized the newly imposed tariffs as "reckless" and "pointless," expressing concern over Trump's reluctance to abandon his so-called "reciprocal" tariff plan. The letter emphasized the nation’s strict laws against insider trading and market manipulation and requested the SEC to investigate whether the tariff declarations resulted in any personal gains for the president or his allies.

The letter was co-signed by Senators Chuck Schumer, Ron Wyden, Mark Kelly, and Representatives Ruben Gallego and Adam Schiff, urging the SEC to respond by April 25 regarding any plans to probe the president’s tariff actions.
